This is kind of a long answer to your question -

It was great to hear the two new Viola Lees from '68. If we had all the early Dead shows, there could have been a hundred more versions from '66-'68, and probably even a few more from '69-'70.

Tell you what... the version The Dead played at Big Coporate-Sponsored Arena last week was garbage, even by the relatively low standards set on this tour. Went nowhere. Too bad, because that one could have been such a slam dunk for them. I love VLB too, but it ain't like it's real hard to play.

The web site "The Setlist Program" lists 31 shows. These of course are "known performances" and the real number would be much higher.

throw in the Violas from 1/20/68 & 1/23/68 (from the RT2.2 release) to make 33 known versions

edit: not to mention the few versions that are part of the assorted '66 GD

although, these may be duplicates of what is on the setlist link you provided; cool stuff either way

viola lee is a real barn burner. who else but the dead could take an old jug tune and make it into a twenty minute jam vehicle?
